In the Italy-Japan game, Kesikuke Honda scored from the penalty spot for his minnow Japanese side, then Kagawa got the second in the 33rd minute. De Rossi brought one back in the 41st minute, but it was not enough as the Italians trailed in the halftime team talk. Uchida scored an unfortunate own goal to bring Italy back into the game. Then Mario Balotelli scored the goal that brought Italy to the lead. Ozakazi brought the equalizer at 3-3. Then Giovinco scored the last and the winner for Italy to bring it 4-3.
